Who hath heard such a thing? – Of a birth so sudden. Usually in childbirth there are the pains of protracted parturition. The earth brings forth its productions gradually and slowly. Nations rise by degrees, and are long in coming to maturity. But here is such an event as if the earth should in a day be covered with a luxurious vegetation, or as if a nation should spring at once into being. The increase in the church would be as great and wonderful as if these changes were to occur in a moment.
Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? – That is, to produce its grass, and flowers, and fruit, and trees. The idea is, that it usually requires much longer time for it to mature its productions. The germ does not start forth at once; the flower, the fruit, the yellow harvest, and the lofty tree are not produced in a moment. Months and years are required before the earth would be covered with its luxuriant and beautiful productions But here would be an event as remarkable as if the earth should bring forth its productions in a single day.
Or shall a nation be born at once? – Such an event never has occurred. A nation is brought into existence by degrees. Its institutions are matured gradually, and usually by the long process of years. But here is an event as remarkable as if a whole nation should be born at once, and stand before the world, mature in its laws, its civil institutions, and in all that constitutes greatness. In looking for the fulfillment of this, we naturally turn the attention to the rapid progress of the gospel in the times of the apostles, when events occurred as sudden and as remarkable as if the earth, after the desolation of winter or of a drought, should be covered with rich luxuriance in a day, or as if a whole nation should start into existence, mature in all its institutions, in a moment. But there is no reason for limiting it to that time. Similar sudden changes are to be expected still on the earth; and I see no reason why this should not be applied to the spread of the gospel in pagan lands, and why we should not yet look for the rapid propagation of Christianity in a manner as surprising and wonderful as would be such an instantaneous change in the appearance of the earth, or such a sudden birth of a kingdom.

Quem viu “E quem viu” – Vinte MSS., (Quatro antigos), de Kennicott, e vinte e nove de De Rossi, e dois antigos de minha autoria, e as duas edições mais antigas, com duas outras, têm ??? umi , adicionando a conjunção ? vau ; e então leia todas as versões antigas. E quem viu?

8. Quem já ouviu isso? Ele exalta a grandeza daquilo de que falou; pois ele quer dizer que haverá uma restauração maravilhosa e “inédita” da Igreja; para que os crentes não a julguem pela ordem da natureza, mas pela graça de Deus; pois quando os homens refletem sobre isso: pensam que é como um sonho, como diz o salmista. ( Salmos 126: 1. ) Ele não quer dizer que a Igreja seja restaurada perfeitamente e em um momento; pois o avanço dessa restauração é grande e prolongado, e é lento na estimativa da carne; mas ele mostra que mesmo o começo excede toda a capacidade do entendimento humano. E, no entanto, ele não fala hiperbolicamente; pois vemos frequentemente que a Igreja produz, que antes não parecia estar grávida. Mais ainda, quando se pensa que ela é estéril, ela se torna frutífera pela pregação do evangelho; para que admiremos muito o evento, quando ele aconteceu, que antes acreditávamos ser totalmente incrível.
Essas coisas foram cumpridas em alguma medida, quando o povo retornou da Babilônia; mas um testemunho muito mais brilhante foi dado no evangelho, cuja publicação resultou imediatamente em uma descendência diversificada e numerosa. Em nossos dias, não vimos o cumprimento dessa profecia? Quantas crianças a Igreja deu à luz durante os últimos trinta anos, nos quais o evangelho foi pregado? Não tem o Senhor seu povo, nos dias atuais, em grande número, em todo o mundo? Portanto, nada foi predito aqui que não seja claramente visto.
Nascerá uma nação de uma vez? Ele ilustra a glória do milagre por uma metáfora. Nenhuma “nação” jamais chegou ao mundo em um instante; pois é aos poucos que os homens se reúnem, crescem em número e espalham sua nação. Mas o caso é muito diferente com a Igreja, que de uma só vez, e em mais de um lugar, gera um grande número de crianças. Isso equivale a dizer que Deus, de uma maneira maravilhosa, fará com que inúmeros filhos da Igreja, de maneira extraordinária, nasçam de uma só vez e de repente.
Uma terra será trazida em um dia? A palavra ??? , ( eretz ,) “uma terra”, pode ser usada para qualquer país ou para seus habitantes.

Quem ouviu isso? quem viu essas coisas? A terra será feita para produzir em um dia? ou nascerá uma nação de uma só vez? pois assim que Sião deu à luz, ela gerou seus filhos.
Pois – Tão logo a voz do evangelho colocou a igreja dos judeus em seu trabalho, nos tempos de Cristo e dos apóstolos, ela produziu atualmente.
