Então deixe-os … – Então os cristãos podem saber que o fim está chegando e devem procurar um lugar de segurança. A destruição não apenas visitaria a “cidade”, mas se estenderia à parte circundante da Judéia.
As montanhas – As montanhas da Palestina abundam em cavernas, um refúgio seguro para aqueles que são perseguidos. Em todas as épocas, essas cavernas têm sido os lugares favoritos dos ladrões, e também foram recorridas pelos que estavam em perigo, 1 Samuel 13: 6 ; 1 Samuel 22: 1 ; 2 Samuel 23:13 ; Josué 10:16 . Nessas montanhas eles estariam a salvo.

Having shown by the testimony of the prophet that, when the temple had been profaned, the services of the Law would soon afterwards be abolished, he adds, that fearful and appalling calamities will soon overtake the whole of Judeea, so that there will be nothing more desirable than to withdraw a distance from it; and, at the same time, he states that they will be so sudden, that time will scarcely be time allowed for the most rapid flight. For such is the import of the expressions, Let not him who is on the house-top enter into the house; let not him who is in the field turn back; that is, lest, by attempting to save their property, they themselves perish. Again, Woe to the women with child, and to them that give suck; for they will not be in a fit condition for flight. Again, Pray that your fight may not be in the winter; that is, that neither a regard to the sacredness of the day, nor the roughness of the roads, nor the shortness of the clays, may prevent or retard your flight. The design of Christ therefore was, first, to arouse his followers, that they might no longer indulge the hope of ease and repose, and the enjoyments of an earthly kingdom; and, secondly, to fortify their minds, that they might not give way under ordinary calamities. Such an admonition, no doubt, was fir from being agreeable, but, in consequence of their stupidity, and the great weight of the calamities, it was highly necessary.

Eusébio e Epifânio dizem que, neste momento, depois que Cestius Gallus levantou o cerco, e Vespasiano estava se aproximando com seu exército, todos os que acreditavam em Cristo deixaram Jerusalém e fugiram para Pella, e outros lugares além do rio Jordão; e todos escaparam maravilhosamente do naufrágio geral de seu país: nenhum deles pereceu. A passagem em Lucas refere-se em termos expressos a uma destruição de Jerusalém que foi cumprida por Tito, 70 dC; a passagem em Mateus para uma futura crise em Jerusalém após a manifestação da abominação. Veja “Besta”; Daniel 7: 8 ; Apocalipse 19:20 e “Armagedom”; Apocalipse 16:14 ; Apocalipse 19:17 .
Como as circunstâncias em ambos os casos serão semelhantes, também são os avisos. No primeiro caso, Jerusalém foi destruída; no segundo, será entregue por interposição divina.

Então, os que estão na Judéia fujam para as montanhas . Assim fizeram os cristãos e foram preservados. É notável que, depois que os romanos, sob Cestus Gallus, fizeram seus primeiros avanços em direção a Jerusalém, eles se retiraram de repente, da maneira mais inesperada e até mesmo impolítica. Isso os cristãos tomaram como um sinal para se aposentar, o que fizeram, alguns para Pella e outros para o Monte Líbano.
